The Vaigai Dam crosses the Vaigai River near Andipatti in Theni district, 70 km from Madurai, 14 km from Theni and 9 km from Andipatti. Chief Minister K. Kamaraj opened it on 21 January 1959. It is described as one of the few dams not set between two mountains, relying wholly on the strength of its concrete. Standing 111 ft high and storing water up to 71 ft, it irrigates farms in Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram districts and supplies drinking water to cities including Madurai.
Parks with children's play areas lie on both sides of the dam, joined by a small bridge in front of it, and a musical dancing fountain plays from 6 am to 8 pm on weekends and government holidays. Nearby is an agricultural research station working on rice, sorghum, black gram, cowpea and cotton. A 6 MW hydroelectric plant has run here since 1990. The nearest station is Andipatti, 10 km away.
