The story

Vaidyanathaswami Temple is a Shiva temple at Thirumazhapadi, historically Mazhuvadi, in Ariyalur district on the northern bank of the Kaveri. Shiva is the presiding deity as Vaidyanathaswami, and his consort Parvati is Sundarambikai. The shrine is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, praised in the Tevaram by Tirugnanasambandar, Tirunavukkarasar and Sundarar.

The temple is famed for its Nandi Kalyanam, the celestial wedding of Nandi, held each year in Panguni, between mid-March and mid-April. Nandeeswara, the bridegroom from the Aiyarappar temple, is carried in a palanquin to marry the goddess Swayambikai of Thirumazhapadi and is received by Vaidyanathaswami. The temple also has a bronze statue of Thiruvalluvar weighing 750 kg, described as the biggest metal statue of the poet in Tamil Nadu.
