The story

Tiruttani, a town in Thiruvallur district, is known for the Arulmigu Subramanya Swamy Temple, which sits on a lone rock about 700 feet above sea level and is revered as one of Murugan's holy abodes. Tradition says the god came here to let his anger cool after defeating the demon Surapadman, which is why the place is also called Shantipuri, the abode of peace. The town is also linked with Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, scholar and former President of India.

Pilgrims climb 365 steps to reach the four enclosures of the temple, one of which has a shrine to Aapat Sahaaya Vinayakar, and the image of Murugan stands within a Rudraksha tower. The saint-poets Arunagirinathar and Ramalinga Swamigal both sang hymns in praise of the shrine. The biggest crowds come for Aadi Krithigai, Poosam, Panguni Uthiram and the Step Festival held on 31 December, when thousands of devotees gather.
