The Tiger and Lion Safari at Tyavarekoppa covers 250 hectares about 10 km from Shivamogga and 275 km from Bangalore. Opened in 1988, it was Karnataka's second safari park after Bannerghatta near Bangalore. Despite its name, lions and tigers are neither the only animals here nor the only big cats.
Asiatic lions, Bengal tigers and Indian leopards live in separate enclosures and are viewed from a guided safari vehicle. A black panther born here in 2012 is on public view, and a tigress that had strayed into nearby villages was caught and brought to the park. More than eleven species of birds, among them white and silver pheasants, red junglefowl and lovebirds, are kept in cages for display.
