The story

The Thiruppunavayil Shiva temple stands on the seashore at Thiruppunavasal near Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu. Its presiding deity is called Vruddhapureeswarar or Pazhampathinathar. In the Pandya region it is counted as the 7th Tevara Stalam. It is also one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, and Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar all composed hymns on its lord.

Tradition says the four Vedas, Brahma, Lakshmi, Mahavishnu and many others worshipped Shiva here, and that all 14 Pandya shrines sung by the Nayanmars manifest themselves at this one, which has 14 Shivalingams. It is also a parihara sthalam for Mangala dosha. Kanchi Maha Periyava held the place in high regard and removed his sandals in reverence before entering.
