The story

Thirukoteeswarar Temple is a Shiva temple at Thirukodikaval, in Thanjavur district's Thiruvidaimarudur taluk, counted among the temples on the northern bank of the Kaveri. Its earliest inscriptions go back to about 750 AD, in the reign of the Pallava king Nandivarman, while the present temple is attributed to Sembiyan Mahadevi, mother of Uttama Chola, who is believed to have built it in 979. A record from the time of Gandaraditya notes a gift of land so that servants would carry five pots of Kaveri water to the temple every day.

The saints Appar and Sambandar sang its praises, and the saint Bhaskararaya of Bhaskararajapuram also came here. Besides the main shrine, the temple houses separate shrines to a wide group of deities, among them Vinayaka, Muruga, Gajalakshmi, Bhairava, the Saptha Kanniyar, Yama with Chitragupta, Surya and Chandra, Bala Sani, the sage Durvasa and Nataraja.
