The story

Sudarkozhundeeswarar Temple at Pennadam is a Shiva temple whose main shrine goes back to the Early Chola period. The sanctum is built in the gajaprishtakara form, curved like the back of an elephant, and Shiva's bull Nandi faces east, turned away from the shrine. A second shrine, set on an artificial hill, is dedicated to Shiva as Javanteeswarar, and here too the Nandi faces away.

The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. The saint Appar is believed to have come here on a series of visits that also took him to Thiruvennainallur, Thirukoilur and Thiruvamathur.
