St. John's Church in Meerut, dedicated to St John the Baptist, was built between 1819 and 1822 for the British military garrison and is described as the oldest garrison church in North India. Its founder was an army chaplain of the Church of England, the Rev. Henry Fischer. It is now a parish of the Agra diocese of the Church of North India and follows the Anglican rite.
The church is in the Palladian or classical style favoured before the Gothic Revival, with a large open interior where air can move freely and an upper balcony no longer in use. Renovations have changed little. Inside are a huge pipe organ, now silent, once fed by hand-worked bellows, along with wooden pews, a brass eagle lectern, a marble baptistry and stained glass, all close to two centuries old. The cemetery nearby has graves over a century old, some badly weathered, and holds the tombs of Sir David Ochterlony and Sir Rollo Gillespie.
