01 — The story

The story

St. Andrew's Church in Kolkata dates from 1818 and is one of the oldest and best-known churches in the city. Its tall Gothic spire has been a familiar part of the skyline since colonial times, when the church was a centre of community life for the British and Anglo-Indian residents of Calcutta.

Several people who played a part in the growth of the city are remembered here. Inside, the walls carry memorial tablets to those who died in various wars and to the victims of the Bengal Famine of 1943, and the church remains an active place of worship as well as a quiet stop on walks through the old colonial quarter.
