The story

The Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple is the principal shrine of Rameswaram, the island pilgrimage town in Ramanathapuram district. Dedicated to Shiva, it is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and draws devotees from all over India. The temple is known for its tall towers and its long sculpted corridors, said to be the longest of any Hindu temple in India, which lead towards the sanctum and its lingam.

Besides Shiva, the temple has shrines for his consort Vishalakshi and for Vinayaka, Subrahmanya and Parvathavardhini, and a very large figure of Nandi. Its story is bound up with the Ramayana: this is where Rama is said to have built a bridge of floating stones to cross to Lanka and free Sita from Ravana, and the temple is seen as a sign of Rama's devotion to Shiva.
