01 — The story

The story

Sri Mahaganapathi Temple in Kollam is dedicated to Ganesha, worshipped as the god who clears obstacles. Its design combines Dravidian and Kerala building traditions, and a tall gopuram covered in detailed carving marks the entrance. Several dynasties and rulers supported the temple over the centuries, and it holds a number of festivals for Ganesha through the year.

Two legends are attached to it. One credits its founding to Parashurama, the axe-bearing avatar of Vishnu, who is said to have flung his axe into the sea; the other holds that the image of Ganesha appeared here on its own. Thirumullavaram Beach is about 6 km away, Thangassery Fort about 11 km and Munroe Island about 20 km.
