The story

Shri Gopinath Temple at Ningthoukhong ranks among the biggest and most important places of worship in Manipur. The present temple was commissioned in 1905 by the ruling Maharaja, at a time when Vaishnavism was spreading quickly through the region. Its idol of Shri Gopinath is said to have been carved from a single large tree trunk.

According to legend, a king met Keshori, a woman from Ningthoukhong, during a war and married her. Their son, Prince Puraraj, cared for the idol, which was kept at Konung Leikai and then Kwasiphai before reaching Ningthoukhong, where it is still worshipped. The temple draws more than ten lakh visitors a year and is busiest during Holi, Diwali, Janmashtami and Durga Puja.
