01 — The story

The story

The Shillong Golf Course lies in a valley wooded with pine and rhododendron. It dates to 1898, when British colonial officers posted in Shillong set it up for their own recreation, and it is described as the third oldest golf course in India. Its admirers call it the "Glen Eagles of the East".

The ground rolls gently and is crossed by small streams, so the fairways merge into the forested hills around them. More than a century after it opened, the course is still played by golfers, keeping a link to the town's colonial past.
