The story

Sarchu is a remote halt on the Manali-Leh Highway, the high road between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. It is a wide plain of rough ground beneath tall peaks, and its skies at night are thick with stars.

Most visitors stay overnight in camps set up among the mountains, rising early to watch first light move over the plains. Bikers, trekkers and road-trippers use Sarchu as a base, several trekking routes into the surrounding high terrain are linked to it, and it is a common gathering point for onward travel deeper into Ladakh.
