01 — The story

The story

Sarai Amanat Khan is a Mughal-era caravanserai about 29 km south-west of Amritsar, on the road between Tarn Taran and Attari. It was built by Amanat Khan, the calligrapher whose inscriptions appear on the Taj Mahal and on Akbar's tomb at Sikandara, in memory of his brother Afzal Khan.

Amanat Khan came from Shiraz in Persia and joined the Mughal court in 1608. When Afzal Khan died, he spent his own earnings on this rest house for travellers. The sarai is noted for its decorated gateways with glazed tile panels and for its mosque, which carries Arabic inscriptions.
