The story

Sanamahi Kiyong stands on the slopes of the Nongmaiching hills on the eastern side of Imphal and is the principal temple of Sanamahism, dedicated to Lainingthou Sanamahi, guardian deity of the Meitei. Completed in 2000, the brick building rises 23 metres from an octagonal base. Its seven storeys stand for the seven Meitei clans and are painted in their colours, with a pyramidal roof on top. Steps on the south side lead to a decorated rectangular doorway.

Pilgrims come throughout the year from across Manipur as well as from Assam, Tripura and Myanmar. The temple also works as a centre of learning for the faith, where students have been taught traditional dance, music and other arts, along with the martial art Thang-ta and the Manipuri polo game Sagol Kangjei.
