The story

Salugara Monastery, whose formal name is the Great International Tashi Gomang Stupa, is a Buddhist centre on the outskirts of Siliguri in northern West Bengal. It was founded by followers of the Dalai Lama, is associated with the 14th Dalai Lama, and is counted among the main Buddhist sites in this part of India.

Its best-known feature is a stupa about 100 feet tall with finely carved surfaces, alongside the white domed Kalachakra Stupa. The complex also has a large prayer hall, a giant prayer wheel, several decorated shrines, a library of Buddhist texts and a small museum of relics and objects. Gardens and meditation halls are open for quiet reflection, and the monastery runs talks on Buddhism, retreats and healing sessions, with festivals through the year.
