The story

Sagargad is a hill fort in Alibag taluka of Raigad district. Shivaji took it from the Adil Shahis in 1660, and it was among the 23 forts surrendered to the Mughals under the Treaty of Purandar. In 1713 Balaji Vishwanath Peshwa included it among 16 fortified posts handed to Kanhoji Angre. Condemned prisoners were said to be thrown from its monkey point.

The path begins at Khandale village on the Alibag–Pen road, and an easy walk of about two hours reaches the fort, which can be visited at any time of year. Along the way are a small Mahishasurmardini temple, a water tank and the Dodhane waterfall, at its best in the monsoon. On the machi, or lower terrace, stands the Siddheshwar monastery, where walkers can stay overnight.
