01 — The story

The story

RIWATCH is a research institute set up in 2009 to record, protect and promote the indigenous knowledge, cultural heritage and sustainable practices of north-east India. It occupies a quiet 6-hectare campus, hosts field studies for M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. students along with study-abroad programmes, and works with partners such as TISS and the Azim Premji Foundation.

For visitors, the main attraction is the RIWATCH Museum, opened in 2017 and often called a people's museum because local communities donated most of its objects. Its displays tell stories of folklore and tradition and trace links between indigenous cultures around the world under the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. The campus also has a documentation centre, a herbal garden on traditional healing, a Centre for Mother Languages, a library and research cottages.
