The story

Rani Mangammal Mahal, also known as the Chokkanatha Nayak Palace, stands at the base of the Rock Fort in Tiruchirappalli. It was built in the mid-17th century by Chokkanatha Nayak, at that time the ruler of Madurai.

The Madurai Nayaks made Tiruchirappalli their capital from 1616 to 1634 and again from 1665 to 1736, and during those years the building served as their Durbar Hall. Today it holds the Government Museum, while a number of state government offices occupy other parts of the complex around the palace.
