01 — The story

The story

Rampuria Haveli is a large red sandstone mansion in Bikaner, built for the Rampurias, one of the city's richest and most powerful families, after whom it is named. The architect Balujee Chalva supervised the work. The writer Aldous Huxley is said to have called it the pride of Bikaner.

It was built from Dulmera red sandstone, and its front is covered in carving and painted decoration. The style blends Mughal, Rajput and Victorian features. Inside, halls and rooms carry frescoes and detailed carvings, along with paintings and fine woodwork. Only some parts of the building can be visited.
