01 — The story

The story

Rampara Wildlife Sanctuary, about 60 km from Rajkot, was set up in November 1988 and covers around 15 square kilometres. Its centre is a largely flat stretch ringed by low hills and covered with shrubs and grasses, and two streams run through an otherwise dry landscape.

More than 280 plant species and 130 bird species have been recorded, among them the Indian roller, crested serpent eagle, black-shouldered kite, white-eyed buzzard and grey francolin, along with mammals and reptiles. A watchtower in the middle of the sanctuary gives a wide view over the terrain and the streams. The Ranjit Vilas Palace lies nearby.
