The story

The Raja Raja Chola Art Gallery, known locally as Thanjavur Kalaikoodam, is a museum housed inside Thanjavur Palace. Its core is a large set of bronze images of Hindu gods and goddesses made between the 9th and 19th centuries AD. The bronzes are prized for their fine detail, which records the dress, jewellery and even hairstyles of their time, and they bring visitors from across India and abroad.

The gallery also displays coins from many periods, the earliest from around 300 BC, along with paintings, small statues and ornaments that once furnished royal halls. Scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata appear throughout the collection, and the walls, arches and pillars of the halls carry the same themes.
