01 — The story

The story

Raghunathji Temple in Kullu was founded in the 17th century by Raja Jagat Singh, then ruler of Kullu, and tradition says he built it as penance for his sins. It has been repaired and enlarged several times while keeping its original form.

The building mixes Pahari and pyramidal styles and was made from local materials. Its front carries detailed woodwork and painted decoration, and inside, the pillars, beams and panels are carved with scenes from Hindu mythology. Lord Rama is the presiding deity, with Lord Vishnu and Goddess Sita also enshrined in the sanctum, and devotees come to pray for prosperity and wellbeing.
