Raghunath Temple in Rishikesh is dedicated to Rama and also enshrines Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman. Renovated and extended many times, it combines North and South Indian styles. A 60-foot gopuram of nine tiers carries hundreds of sculptures of deities and legends. Inside, Ramayana paintings line the walls, the mandapa has 16 carved pillars, and the domed ceiling shows Vishnu reclining on a serpent.
Within the grounds is Rishikund, an old tank said to have been built by the sage Kubz. Tradition holds that Rama bathed here and that the waters of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati meet in it. The tank reflects the temple above.
