The story

Papikonda National Park covers just over 1,012 square kilometres of the Papi Hills near Rajamahendravaram, spread across Andhra Pradesh's Polavaram and Eluru districts. It began as a wildlife sanctuary in 1978 and became a national park in 2008. The Godavari River runs through it, and the land rises from 20 to 850 metres under moist and dry deciduous forest.

Camera traps and sightings have recorded tiger, leopard, rusty-spotted cat, sloth bear and honey badger, along with gaur, sambar, nilgai, four-horned antelope and the Indian spotted chevrotain. Both rhesus and bonnet macaques live here, though they usually keep to opposite sides of the Godavari. BirdLife International named it an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area in 2016; species include the black-bellied tern, Malabar pied hornbill and Malabar trogon. The Indian golden gecko and king cobra have also been reported. Poaching, forest fires and clearing for cultivation threaten the park.
