The story

Panimur, in Dima Hasao district of Assam, is best known for the Panimur Waterfall, nicknamed the Niagara of the Northeast. Here the Kopili River spreads across rocky ground into a wide, milky-white cascade, at its fullest in autumn. The country around is hilly, part of the Barail range, with a varied range of plants and animals.

Winter and spring are the popular seasons, and people come for the views, sightseeing and picnics. Activities include river crossing, waterfall rappelling, rafting and night trekking. Public transport is limited, so a hired car or bike is the practical way in. The nearest railway station is Lanka in Hojai district, about 38 km away; by road Panimur is reached via NH-27 from Lanka or via National Highway 627 from Haflong, 120 km away, and the nearest major town is Lumding, at 73 km.
