The story

Panidehing Wildlife Sanctuary covers 33.93 square kilometres of wetland in the northern part of Sivasagar district, about 22 km from Sivasagar town. It lies between the Desang and Demow rivers and was given sanctuary status in 1996. Around 165 bird species have been recorded here, including bar-headed and greylag geese, spot-billed duck, mallard, gadwall, wigeon, garganey, shoveller, and both red-crested and common pochards.

Storks are a major draw: greater and lesser adjutants, open-billed storks and white-necked storks feed in the marshes, while fishing eagles hunt over the water. Rhinos and tigers once lived in the area but no longer do; wild elephants, hog deer, rhesus macaques and otters are still found here.
