The story

Palunkanda Nathar Temple is a Shiva temple in the village of Thiruvaipadi, close to Thiruppanandal. The temple is tied to the life of Chandesvara Nayanar, counted among the 63 Nayanmars, the Saivite saints of Tamil tradition. Legend says that while he was employed as a cowherd here he shaped a lingam and worshipped it by pouring over it milk from the cows in his care.

The Saivite saint Thirunavukkarasar composed hymns in praise of the temple, and these form part of the Tevaram, the body of devotional verse that honours the shrines of Shiva in Tamil country.
