The story

The Orchid Centre in Mandal village, about 20 km from Chamoli town, was the first facility of its kind in Uttarakhand. Run by the Research Wing of the Uttarakhand Forest Department, it works to conserve orchids native to the Himalayan region and holds about 70 species on a six-acre site.

The centre is laid out in four sections: a nursery, an interpretation centre, an orchid trail 1.25 km long, and areas for conservation and demonstration. Its collection includes Dendrobium and Vanda orchids. It also hosts workshops and educational programmes for local communities and serves researchers studying orchid ecology.
