Formerly called the Museum of Tribal Arts and Artefacts, this Bhubaneswar museum documents the life and culture of over 60 tribal communities. It was planned as a museum of man, and in 2010 UNESCO named it the best of India's 21 tribal museums. Its five halls hold 2,247 objects, including the Phute saree of the Santhal, the Ringa of the Bonda and the Gatungkap of the Lanjia Saora.
Out in the courtyard stand images of tribal gods, copies of 14 kinds of shrine craft, and full-size dwellings built in the styles of the Kondh, Juang, Santal, Saora and Gadaba. Other displays cover musical instruments such as flutes, drums and string instruments, plus hunting weapons, farm tools and household utensils. Expert-led guided tours are offered, and the campus also has a library and a small zoo.
