The story

The Netroddharakaswami Temple stands at Panaiyapuram in Viluppuram district and is dedicated to Shiva, worshipped as a lingam. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, and the archaeologist R. Nagaswamy notes that Sambandar praised it. The present temple was built early in the 11th century by Rajendra Chola I in honour of his assistant Paravai, after whom the village was called Paravaipuram, though an older temple is believed to have stood here before.

The complex keeps inscriptions from four Chola rulers: Rajendra I and II, Adhirajendra and Kulothunga I. When the National Highway 45 was to be widened, there were fears the temple would be demolished, but the National Highways Authority of India decided to spare it.
