Narkanda is a small town at about 8,500 feet in Himachal Pradesh, surrounded by forest and facing the high Himalaya. It is among the oldest skiing spots in the country, with slopes suited both to beginners and to experienced skiers, and it has drawn skiers since 1980. Snow usually arrives in December, and from January to March certified instructors run classes on marked ski grounds.
The town is also the starting point for Hatu Peak, the highest point in Shimla district at 12,000 feet. The route climbs through deodar, fir, spruce, cedar and blue pine, and camping is possible along the way.
