Naldehra lies near Shimla at about 2,200 metres and takes its name from Nal Deo, a local deity. Folklore explains its open glade through a quarrel between two local devtas over which of them ranked higher: their battle supposedly burned the trees and melted the stones, and the ground has stayed a bare meadow ever since.
Lord Curzon, the British Viceroy, came here in 1905 and was so taken with the spot that he set up a golf course of nine holes, later enlarged to eighteen; his third daughter was given the name Alexandra Naldehra. The course ranks among the oldest in India and is ringed by cedar forest and Himalayan ridges.
