The story

The Nadir Shah Mosque stands in the western part of Tiruchirappalli, close to the Tiruchirappalli Fort railway station. Rulers of the Carnatic Sultanate built it, and it takes its name from Babayya Nadir Shah, a Muslim cleric buried in its precincts.

Two figures of Carnatic history are also believed to lie here. One is Nawab Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah. The other is the general Chanda Sahib, whose body was buried without its head after Pratap Singh, the Maratha ruler of Thanjavur, had him beheaded.
