01 — The story

The story

Mouling National Park spreads over about 483 sq km along the Siang River's right bank in the Upper Siang area. Declared in 1982, it remains one of the less-visited parks of north-east India. Steep hills and river valleys carry forest that changes with height, from tropical evergreen growth low down to temperate, coniferous and alpine cover higher up, with orchids, bamboo and foxtail plants throughout.

There are no roads into the interior, so the park is reached only on seasonal treks from surrounding villages, crossing hanging bridges and dense forest. Waterfalls hidden in the woods include Dabung and Nirbung. Many of the park's species have yet to be fully recorded.
