01 — The story

The story

Minicoy, called Maliku by its people, is the southernmost island of Lakshadweep. It is shaped like a crescent and encloses one of the largest lagoons in the group, which is used for snorkelling, scuba diving and kayaking. Its lighthouse is among the oldest in the islands, and tuna fishing is a trade handed down over many generations.

The island has its own language, food and customs. Its people live in ten orderly villages known as Avah, where homes feature painted wooden swing cots. Local crafts include painted boat models and traditional boatbuilding, and dances such as Lava, Thaara, Dandi, Fuli and Bandiya are performed. Decorated Jahadhoni boats are raced, used to welcome dignitaries and taken on picnics to the islets of Viringili and Raggan. Onam, Eid and the annual National Minicoy Fest are celebrated here.
