01 — The story

The story

Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over about 208 square kilometres of Sattari, in north-eastern Goa, close to the village of Valpoi. It is named after the Mhadei River, which runs through the middle of it. Deciduous trees make up most of the forest, alongside evergreen groves, the evergreen Ashoka with its saffron flowers, and wild orchids, some of them endemic.

More than 255 bird species have been recorded here, among them the Malabar pied hornbill and the Indian paradise flycatcher. Visitors have reported Bengal tigers in the forest, and a proposal to make it a tiger reserve is under consideration. Guided walks and hikes are offered, and the river is used for rafting in the monsoon, when the forest is at its greenest.
