01 — The story

The story

The Mata Murti Temple stands on the bank of the Alaknanda River in Badrinath, in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is dedicated to Mata Murti, honoured as the mother of the twin sages Nara and Narayana.

The temple's legend says Mata Murti was a devotee of Vishnu who prayed that he would be born as her child; he agreed and came into the world as the two brothers. Worshipping her is believed to free devotees from worldly suffering. Navratri is celebrated here, and a yearly fair is held in September on Shravan Dwadashi in her honour. Pilgrims bound for Badrinath Dham often stop to pray and perform rituals.
