01 — The story

The story

Mashobra lies about 13 km from Shimla at roughly 7,700 feet. Its forested slopes form one of Asia's biggest watersheds, the catchment that provides Shimla with its water.

The town is known for The Retreat at Chharabra, one of two residences in India kept for the President (the other is Rashtrapati Nilayam in Secunderabad). The President stays there at least once a year, and the main office shifts to Mashobra for the visit. The all-wooden building dates from 1850. In May 1948 Lord and Lady Mountbatten spent several weeks there before leaving India, and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru came to see them.
