The museum occupies Dhubela Palace, an 18th-century Bundela building at Dhubela, about 62 km from Khajuraho, beside a lake with hills, ruins and mausoleums around it. Set up in 1955 inside a palace that Maharaja Chhatrasal built, it gathers antiquities from Bundelkhand and parts of Baghelkhand. Medieval sculpture is also shown on open platforms, and a library holds about 2,300 books on history and archaeology.
The eight galleries cover Kalchuri and Bundela inscriptions; Jain sculpture including Tirthankaras Adinatha, Shantinatha, Naminatha and Parshwanatha; Shaiva and Shakti images such as Uma-Maheshwara, Bhairava and an 18th-century Nandi; Vaishnava pieces like Sheshashayee Vishnu and Vamana; paintings linked to the rulers of Rewa, Panna and Charkhari; ivory, glass, metal and terracotta objects; and weapons, among them Raiman Daua's sword and a cannon of Adil Sher Shah. One room has eight large distorting mirrors.
