The story

The Lakshmi Devi Temple at Doddagaddavalli, called Gadumballi in old inscriptions, lies about 20 km north-west of Hassan and 16 km south of Halebidu, on the bank of an old reservoir south of the village. Kalhana Ravuta, a rich merchant, and his wife Sahaja Devi had it built in 1113 CE in the reign of Vishnuvardhana, and it is considered the first Hoysala temple.

Four square shrines share one hall, each facing a cardinal direction: Mahalakshmi to the east, Kali to the north, Shiva, worshipped as Lakshmi's brother, to the west, and an empty southern shrine that once held Vishnu before vandals destroyed it. A Bhairava shrine stands to the north-east, and four small corner shrines sit within the seven-foot wall, making nine shrines in all, each topped by a pyramidal Nagara spire. The goddess is regarded as a jagrat, or wakeful, devi.
