Lahartara Pond in Varanasi is linked with the poet and mystic Kabir. Legend says Kabir was discovered here as a baby, lying on a lotus in the water and that his foster parents, Neeru and Neema, took him home from here, which gives the pond deep importance for the Kabir Panthis. It lies close to the GT Road towards Allahabad, about 2.5 kilometres from Varanasi Cantonment railway station and a short distance from Kabir Math.
Once a freshwater lake of 17 acres, the pond has since been split up. About 3.5 acres are protected by the Uttar Pradesh directorate of archaeology and some 8 acres belong to Satguru Kabir Prakat Dham, which tends its portion, while the remainder has suffered from encroachment, dumping and wastewater.
