The story

Kumara Mangalam Temple in Kumarakom is a shrine to Murugan, the god of war and victory, set among trees beside Vembanad Lake. It is thought to be several centuries old and has long been the main place of worship for the local community. Over time it has been rebuilt and restored while keeping its traditional form.

The temple follows Kerala style, with heavy wooden pillars carved with deities and mythological scenes. A gopuram decorated with colourful sculptures marks the entrance, and the sanctum holds the ornamented idol of Murugan. Ceremonies take place in an open-sided mandapam that catches the breeze off the lake, and an outer courtyard ringed by gardens offers space for quiet sitting and meditation.
