01 — The story

The story

Kudala Sangama lies where the Krishna and Malaprabha rivers meet, in Bagalkot district of northern Karnataka, and is one of the chief pilgrimage places of the Lingayat community. It is honoured as the final resting place of Basavanna, the 12th-century poet and reformer, who worshipped Shiva at the Sangameshwara Temple here.

The Sangameshwara Temple has a porch, a navaranga hall and a sanctum, with images that include Neelamma, Nandi and Ganapathi. Out in the river a small stone mandapa shelters a Shivalinga, enclosed by a concrete well wall that holds back the water, and a temple to Neelamma stands opposite. The Anubhava Mantapa and a Basaveshwara Temple serve as memorials to his life and teachings. Almatti Dam is about 32 km away.
