Krishnapatnam is a port town on the Andhra Pradesh coast that began as a settlement of fishermen and traders. Its port, privately run and counted among the deepest in India, is linked by tradition to the Vijayanagara emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya, who is thought to have used it for sea trade; the port is named after him and is known today as KPCL.
Krishnapatnam Beach has a long sandy shore and mostly calm water, edged by green vegetation and rock formations. On a small rise close to the shore stands the Krishnapatnam Lighthouse, which has guided ships along this coast for many years. When it is open to visitors, its top looks out over the Bay of Bengal, the beach and the port.
