Kilimanoor Palace in Thiruvananthapuram district dates from 1753 and was once home to members of the Travancore royal family. It is laid out as a nalukettu, with four wings around a central courtyard joined by long corridors. Teak pillars carved with floral and mythological designs support a clay-tiled roof, and murals in the halls show Hindu legends and scenes of royal life.
The painter Raja Ravi Varma, born in 1848, spent his early years here. The palace keeps a collection of his work, including early sketches and paintings that trace how his style developed. The grounds cover several acres of gardens, old trees and ponds.
