Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary lies on the outskirts of Jamnagar near the Arabian Sea coast. What were once salt pans and freshwater lakes have developed into a mix of wetlands and mangroves that supports a wide range of plants and animals, making it one of India's richest bird habitats.
In winter, migratory birds arrive from Siberia, Europe and Africa: flamingos, pelicans and painted storks gather in the shallows, marsh harriers hunt overhead and warblers move through the reeds. Jackals, jungle cats and nilgai also live here. Walking trails and watchtowers overlook the water, and the sanctuary is reached by road from Jamnagar by taxi or bus.
