The story

Kanhargaon Wildlife Sanctuary covers approximately 269 sq km in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. Notified in 2021, it was the 50th sanctuary declared in the state, part of an effort to protect forest habitat outside existing tiger reserves.

Dry deciduous forest typical of central India dominates, with teak, bamboo and tendu among the main plants. The land lies within an important tiger landscape and connects protected areas like Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve with neighbouring forest. Leopard, gaur, sambar, chital and wild boar are found here, along with various birds and reptiles. The state Forest Department manages it, and boundary demarcation and a management plan were begun after notification.
