The story

The Kalingarayan Anicut, a barrage across the Bhavani river in Erode district, stands just upstream of Kooduthurai at Bhavani, where the Bhavani joins the Kaveri. It was built by the Kongu chieftain Kalingarayan Gounder, and the work on the dam and its canal began in 1271 and was finished in 1283.

It is one of the early river-linking schemes of Tamil Nadu: the barrage turns water into the Kalingarayan Canal, joining the Bhavani to the Noyyal, and the system still irrigates about 15,743 acres. The embankments were strengthened with concrete in 2016. The state government planned in 2017 to make the site a tourist attraction, and that year a children's park, a memorial hall and a statue of Kalingarayan were opened.
